On the Road to a $100 Billion Partnership: The Future of India–Russia Trade
5/29/2026
Trade between India and Russia continues to gain momentum. Bilateral trade has already reached $60 billion, and both countries have set an ambitious target of increasing this figure to $100 billion by 2030. Logistics plays a crucial role in achieving this goal, and CARGO-EXPRESS has long been actively developing its expertise in the Indian market.
"Our company has been working with India for many years and has built a strong and reliable network of partners across the region. We clearly see a growing trend in business cooperation between our countries and therefore pay special attention to this destination. Today, the main commodity groups we transport include pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, automotive spare parts, and chemical products," says Artem Korotov, Head of Business Development at CARGO-EXPRESS.
At the same time, trade between the two countries remains significantly imbalanced. Imports account for the majority of trade turnover, while Russian exports to India remain below $5 billion. This imbalance is largely driven by geopolitical factors and energy security considerations.
However, India has recently conducted a detailed analysis comparing its export capabilities with Russia’s import demand and identified more than 300 promising product categories, including engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, agricultural products, and consumer goods.
Engineering products alone illustrate the scale of opportunity. India currently exports approximately $90 million worth of engineering products to Russia, while Russian imports in this sector exceed $2.7 billion annually.

The pharmaceutical sector presents another major growth area. Russia imports approximately $9.7 billion worth of medicines each year, while Indian pharmaceutical exports account for only $546 million of that volume. Considering that India is one of the world's leading producers of generic medicines and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), there is significant potential for expansion.
Key Challenges
- Payment Infrastructure
Financial settlements between the two countries remain complicated due to sanctions and banking restrictions. Expanding settlements in national currencies (Indian rupees and Russian rubles) and establishing reliable clearing mechanisms will be essential.
- Logistics and Supply Chains
Further development of transport infrastructure and optimization of supply chains are required. Multimodal transportation solutions combining sea, rail, and road transport can significantly improve efficiency and reduce transit times.
- Standards and Certification
Mutual recognition of quality standards and simplification of certification procedures would facilitate market access for both exporters and importers.
- Distribution Networks
The primary objective is not simply to increase trade volumes, but to build resilient and sustainable supply chains. This is where logistics becomes a strategic enabler. Without reliable infrastructure, efficient payment mechanisms, and well-designed transport routes, even the most promising products may struggle to reach their destination.

«We see tremendous potential in the Indian market," comments Artem Korotov. "Logistics today is far more than moving cargo from one point to another. It is about strengthening economic ties between nations. Every shipment delivered on time contributes to building a more balanced and sustainable trade relationship between India and Russia».
The current trade imbalance has every opportunity to evolve into a strong and mutually beneficial partnership. As India and Russia move toward more balanced economic cooperation, logistics will remain one of its key foundations.
